Introducing Foray into Phonics
Hello There
My name is Riss Leung and I'm an Australian literacy consultant. I'm a former primary school principal, Teaching and Learning coach and Book Week judge.
I believe literacy changes lives and my mission is to enable every student- irrespective of their postcode- to have access to the highest quality literacy instruction.
A few years ago I challenged myself to step outside of my Balanced-Literacy comfort zone to foray into the world of effective phonics instruction. Back then, I wanted to know what research really said about effective reading instruction and learn if there were any tweaks or changes I needed to make to my instruction.
It's fair to say that I found this journey challenging at times, but I'm so glad I was brave enough to get outside my comfort zone- all the students I work with are much better for it!
I created Foray into Phonics to gently guide you through your own phonics learning journey in a safe and nurturing environment (something I found missing when going through the journey myself).

TESTIMONIALS
Rachel, Foundation teacher
"A hesitation I had about signing up was making sure I could fit it into my schedule. I was worried I would sign up with good intention about getting it done but it might fall to the wayside. Once I did the first module, I realised there was no risk of that happening as I couldn't wait for the next module to 'drop' and would look forward to it each Monday."
Michelle, F-6 Literacy leader
"I loved that it was so practical with not too much theory (because theory and research can get too much!) It was short, sharp and to the point, with just the right amount of everything. It was broken up into manageable chunks, and the best part, is that it is self-paced! "
Melissa, Foundation teacher
"I loved how detailed and in-depth the course went into the different factors around the science behind learning to read, and the throughlines that the 'science of reading' is much more than phonics, but that phonics is an integral and core element of learning to read, and that more prominence much be given to it in the early and junior years. I also loved how it was presented in the classic Riss style - knowledgeable, practical, and humourous when needed!"
