Elise B, Foundation Teacher

Hello There!

My name is Riss Leung and I'm an Australian literacy consultant. I'm a former primary school principal, Teaching and Learning coach and Book Week judge.

A few years ago, I challenged myself to step outside of my Balanced-Literacy comfort zone and foray into the world of effective phonics instruction. Back then, I wanted to know what research really said about effective reading instruction and if I needed to make any tweaks or changes to my teaching practice.

It's fair to say that I found this journey challenging at times, but I'm so glad I was brave enough to get outside my comfort zone- all the teachers and students I work with are much better for it!

I created Foray into Phonics to guide you through your own phonics learning journey in a safe, nurturing and understanding environment (something that wasn't around when I was going through the journey myself).

My superpower is to take complex research and information and translate it into simple and practical advice for teachers. That's exactly what I've done in this course.

Course delivery

The course is divided into 6 modules, each approximately 1 hour long (Modules 3 and 6 are 2 hours).

  • Weekly rollout: A new module is released every Monday over 6 weeks, giving you time to apply what you learn with your students before moving on to thenext topic.
  • Flexible learning: You have 12 months of access, so there’s no pressure to stick to the weekly schedule.

Once all 6 modules are released, join a live Q&A session on Zoom to get your questions answered and dive deeper into the content.

Rachel, Foundation teacher

"A hesitation I had about signing up was making sure I could fit it into my schedule. I was worried I would sign up with good intention about getting it done but it might fall to the wayside. Once I did the first module, I realised there was no risk of that happening as I couldn't wait for the next module to 'drop' and would look forward to it each Monday."

Testimonial

Michelle, F-6 Literacy leader

"I loved that it was so practical with not too much theory (because theory and research can get too much!) It was short, sharp and to the point, with just the right amount of everything. It was broken up into manageable chunks, and the best part, is that it is self-paced! "

Testimonial

Melissa, Foundation teacher

"I loved how detailed and in-depth the course went into the different factors around the science behind learning to read, and the throughlines that the 'science of reading' is much more than phonics, but that phonics is an integral and core element of learning to read, and that more prominence much be given to it in the early and junior years. I also loved how it was presented in the classic Riss style - knowledgeable, practical, and humourous when needed!"
